Whether you are making your own outfits or just sprucing up a ready-to-wear piece, a great button can make all the difference. There’s no need to settle for the run-of-the-mill closures when you have plenty places to buy from. Here are some of my favorite sources:

For uniqueness: If you are looking for quality, then go vintage. There is an extensive collections on BJ’s Lapidary; Cartwrights’s Sequins and Vintage Buttons, and especially eBay. For an offbeat selection: Whether it’s a porcelain polka-dot teapot, a silver trout or a set of domino buttons that you are seeking, you’ll find an unusual selection at Dana Marie. You can even buy buttons by the pound. Buy handmade: Search for “handmade buttons for sewing” on Etsy.com and you’ll land on over 5,000 options, from hand-painted to wooden to custom-covered. The supplier: JHB is big in the button world. Browse their wholesale site to see the complete catalog but you’ll need to call them to find out where to buy the closure that you crave. Beautiful buttons: This site really does live up to its name. Beautiful Buttons is based out of Mississippi and chock-full of interesting options. It is also a wholesale site, but you can just call to find out where to purchase. Real Bad Kitty: This boutique takes buttons beyond functional purposes and reinterprets them into fun accessories. Check out their bridal bouquets, bobby pins, Easter button trees and more. Worth the trip: If you are ever within spitting distance of Manhattan, Tender Buttons is the best shop, like, ever.

DIY Design: Where to Find the Best Buttons

Broken Hearts Club Paris
The Broken Hearts Club, a regular party in Berlin, has a special Paris edition planned for Jan 25th during Fashion Week. Henrik Vibskov, Fetish (Gigolo Rec. TNT), DJ KAOS (DFA/TNT), Karl-Oskar (Wood Wood) and other guests will each hit the decks to play their 10 favorite, love songs. Sadly, it's by invitation only, so we're sworn to secrecy on the details. But a clever person, like yourself, could probably find a way to email an invite request to the right place.

Break out the party hats — Ann Taylor is one-year new!

Since this was as good a time as ever, the company threw a blowout bash to celebrate its fresh, kind-of-hip status.

With models sporting the Fall 2010 collection, the lobby of Manhattan’s uber-cool Ace Hotel was transformed into a lounge filled with hipsters, stunning women, and a few hot celebs (”Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks, her actor husband Geoffrey Arend, and former “OC” star Rachel Bilson).

“I have a vision of the Ann Taylor woman going to Paris and being inspired and influenced by all these new buildings and the chicness of the Parisian women,” the brand’s head designer, Lisa Axelson, told StyleList.

“Being opened up to a new culture inspires you to think a little differently,” which is not unlike the place Axelson is at with the Ann Taylor brand.

“We have one foot rooted soundly in our history, but we’re starting to edge forward with fashion and modernism. I like the clash and tension in the building that’s going on.”

Taking a break from the film-festival circuit, where she’s promoting indie flick “Waiting for Forever,” Bilson drank in the fashion scene.

The actress was clad in chic fringed short-shorts with an Ann Taylor cardigan and assorted Ann Taylor accessories, including a crystal-studded belt (worn as a necklace).

“I’m a huge clothes person and I’m an even bigger accessories person,” Bilson told StyleList. “The accessories are just amazing,” she said, gesturing to her belt/necklace. “I’m very excited to start wearing them.”

As the evening wore on, singer V.V. Brown took over the room and serenaded the crowd with her dulcet tones. It was not a bad place to be.

Disease detective plans GPS-enabled asthma inhaler

Analog inhalers make way for GPS

The project is still in its early stages, but David’s goal is to eventually map out danger zones that could be life-threatening to those stricken with the lung disease. He already has it all mapped out: “rescue inhalers” will pinpoint the location of each asthmatic attack and cross-reference it with other devices, attempting to detect new locations and trends that previously flew under the radar undetected by asthma researchers. Van Sickle envisions a time when his technology can help researchers discover exactly why people suffer from asthma.

“It will allow us to better target public-health interventions to the places and times when people are really suffering,” Van Sickle said.

Thanks to David Van Sickle, we’ll soon be able to track (and hopefully eliminate) recurring asthma attack outbreaks. Van Sickle, a scholar in the Department of Population Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is working with students in the biomedical engineering program to create an asthma inhaler with a built-in GPS receiver.

Digital music suffering from entrepreneur drain

PASADENA, Calif.-Of all the losses suffered by the music industry, one of the biggest may be the fact that nearly all of the investors that once were building digital music services have moved on.

Pakman agreed that such influencers are a key factor. “Bloggers are the music critics (of today),” Pakman said.

He also wants to make more of the “social music leaders” on MySpace.

“What the music industry never encouraged or even allowed was building an ecosystem around its product,” Pakman said.

“Investors lost a lot of money in this space,” he said, speaking on a breakfast panel at the Fortune Brainstorm: Tech conference here. The loss for the industry, he said is that entrepreneurs have moved on to areas like Twitter and Facebook.

MySpace Music President Courtney Holt (left) listens on as venture capitalist David Pakman (center) speaks at a panel on the future of the music industry.

“There are people at MySpace that curate music that have audiences that would rival terrestrial radio,” Holt said. “I’m trying to figure out how I can give them more power.”

Those two services both have an application programming interface that allows anyone with an idea to connect to their service using generic terms. That, Pakman, said, is missing in music.

“There are not a lot of entrepreneurs involved in this space,” said David Pakman, a music industry veteran and now venture capitalist at Venrock Associates.

By Pakman’s count, there have been 109 venture-backed digital music start-ups. Fewer than five, though, produced a substantial return, he said.

During her years at CNET News, Ina Fried has changed beats several times, changed genders once, and covered both of the Pirates of Silicon Valley. These days, most of her attention is focused on Microsoft. E-mail Ina.

For his part, MySpace Music President Courtney Holt said he thinks a big part of his opportunity is in providing new tools for music artists, building on MySpace’s existing strength of helping connect musicians with their fans.

Then you can save money to re-sign Frankie, give various people raises & long-terms, and extend Vlad.
